Chicago to NYC: Congratulations Mamdani!

06/25/2025

Congratulations to the Zohran Mamdani campaign for securing the Democratic nomination for New York mayor! Congratulations to Zohran himself, to every staffer, every endorsing organization, and to every volunteer who made this dream a reality.

Congratulations to a campaign that reminded the world, just as so many of our own Chicago candidates have done: that left-wing politics, organizations, and an inspired ground game can triumph over establishment candidates and their cash. Congratulations for reminding us that expensive polling and advertisements are never as effective as door-to-door conversations.

Congratulations for bringing us all hope during these uncertain times. Because in truth, we all needed this.

Six months of Trump, six months of his “flooding the zone”, six months when we all vacillated between feeling isolated and seeing the big protests on the streets.

But here, we witnessed a calculable and deliberate rebuke of the last six months. Here, a shining light to remind us that electoral work, in addition to the other fields of struggle, can be a beacon to push politics forward when Trump and his goons try to drag us back to the Stone Age. Here, we had an election to remind us that we are actually the majority, and our only weakness is our atomization. An election to remind us that when we are organized, willing to stick to our left-wing principles, and willing to fight, we can win.

Even during the worst of times.

33WF is over the moon for New York City and the myriad of organizations, individuals, and the political ecosystem that brought this victory to fruition. We know this would not have been possible without the steadfast organizing efforts of the New York Working Families Party, NYC-DSA, the Sunrise Movement NYC, Jewish Voice for Peace NYC, NYC’s many neighborhood groups, labor and tenants unions, and too many other organizations to list.

Onward to November and to all the potential opportunities and pitfalls that a mayoral victory would provide with a socialist in an executive seat of power and confronted with Trump’s rising authoritarianism. Onward to courageously moving with eyes wide open and with a base of organizers that can win elections today and build the New York City of tomorrow.

And to quote mayoral candidate Brad Lander, "Andrew Cuomo is in the past. He is not the present or future of New York City. Good fucking riddance."
